HESS Hagalaz Reseña por W.Wolf (Español)

HESS
es una banda de Heavy Metal Clásico de Argentina, y antes que cualquier
"buena persona" políticamente correcta se cague en sus propios
pantalones debido al nombre de la banda, conviene dar aquí una alerta: sus
pañales pueden permanecer limpios, ya que el nombre proviene sencillamente del
apellido de la cantante. Acerca de la Señorita Hess nos ocupamos más adelante.
Las
influencias de HESS son KING DIAMOND, DIO, IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, y otras
parecidas, así como también bandas más actuales. Si se quiere tomar las
influencias de la fundadora de la banda y cantante, apelando a un notable
parecido con NIGHTWISH (ya que se trata de una cantante de ópera), esto no
sería tan así, pues su canto es tanto duro por veces como animado, hasta rozar
con el clásico sonido de un "Metal Pesado teutónico".
"Hagalaz"
es un álbum de sesenta minutos, cuyo título ha sido tomado de la Runa del mismo
nombre (atención a ésto "buenas personas"-aclaración), y contiene nueve
temas propios y un cover de JOAN BAEZ/JUDAS PRIEST.
El
álbum comienza con "Blood & Iron", un tema que nada tendría que
envidiarle a Rock 'n' Rolf Kasparek de RUNNING WILD. La relativamente alta voz líder
es muy clara, y como anteriormente se ha dicho, recuerda más o menos a
NIGHTWISH, como el resto de la obra. Esto, claro está, es una opinión propia.
"The
Hessian" es el segundo tema y contiene dos invitados en las voces.
Musicalmente, es un tema que recuerda al viejo IRON MAIDEN de los 80's.
La
sigue la muy buena "Clarisse's Nightmare", canción de seis minutos,
tema que comienza bastante tranquilo y que se desarrolla, luego de unos buenos
dos minutos, hacia las líneas de los primeros dos temas. Contrariamente a
estos, la voz no es tan alta.
La
canción número cuatro lleva un nombre en alemán: "Der Teufel und sein
Lehrling", realmente una sorpresa. El interesante texto contiene las
líneas: "La guerra ganaremos, la Lanza Sagrada debemos hallar, los
cantantes cantan a la luna, en honor a la raza superior". Y hacia el
final: "El Diablo no perdona, luego de la muerte viviremos, ante mi Señor,
lo sé, Él me hará libre. No me arrepiento de nada".
"The
Giant" está dedicada a la memoria de RONNIE JAMES DIO y ha sido escrita
completamente en su nombre. Este tema de seis minutos recuerda musicalmente,
entera y completamente a DIO, aún en la voz femenina.
"Interpretación"
ha sido compuesta enteramente en Castellano, sobre lo cual mucho no puedo
opinar, excepto que es un tema de Heavy Metal Clásico.
"Sailor's
Cross", el séptimo tema, llega con la fuerza típica de un metal clásico y
teutónico, al estilo de las viejas bandas, como RUNNING WILD. El texto hace
alusión a la historia real de la confrontación entre los E.E.U.U. y la U.R.S.S.
en 1962.
También
de una historia real se trata la octava canción: "Perpetual Flight",
que es acerca de un hombre leal que emprende un vuelo hacia una tierra lejana y
extraña, donde es encerrado y condenado por años, hasta ser asesinado luego de
cuarenta y seis años de cautiverio. Musicalmente es muy similar a las
anteriores.
"Boleskine
House", la canción más larga del álbum, con más de ocho minutos de
duración, es absolutamente un clásico tema de Heavy Metal, con uno o varios
solos de guitarra. La voz principal tiene aquí nuevamente otra voz de
acompañamiento, lo cual la hace válidamente más rica en la composición musical.
El
último tema es un cover de JOAN BAEZ: "Diamonds and Rust", tema que
también es interpretado por JUDAS PRIEST. Quien conoce la obra sabe lo que
puede esperar. Aquí se trata de una tranquila balada con una aguda voz
femenina.
Si
bien no soy (mas) un gran fanático del Heavy Metal (¿lo fui alguna vez?),
"Hagalaz", el álbum debut de HESS, es un Heavy Metal excepcional en
todas sus letras. Por lo tanto, debido a que la Señorita Hess posee un alto
registro de voz, resulta ser placentero de oír para aquellos que gusten de este
tipo de vocalización. La búsqueda de una similitud con NIGHTWISH puede estar,
como antes se ha destacado, disponible y justificada, ya que la cantante ha
estado en una banda de covers de NIGHTWISH. Con influencias o no de los
finlandeses, la música de HESS es cien por ciento más honesta, y no tiene, de
pies a cabeza, nada de cursi.
Como
conformación suplementaria del álbum, debemos decir que posee una portada
fantástica y ensoñadora. Por el momento, el álbum solo está disponible en
versión digital.

HESS is a Classic Heavy Metal band from Argentina, and
before any politically correct “do-gooder” shits in his own pants due to the
band’s name, here’s a warning: your diapers may remain clean, for the name
simply comes from the singer’s surname. We shall deal with Miss Hess later on.
Some influences HESS has are: KING DIAMOND, DIO, IRON
MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, among other similar ones, as well as more contemporary
bands. If you want to take into account the influences of the band’s founding
member and singer appealing to a close resemblance to NIGHTWISH (considering
that it’s about an opera singer), this wouldn’t be quite so, for her singing is
as hard at times as it is lively, up to the point of bordering on the classic
sound of a ‘Teutonic Heavy Metal’.
Hagalaz is an album of about 60 minutes, whose title
has been taken from the Rune of the same name (warning, “do-gooders” –
clarification), and it consists of nine songs of their own plus a cover song of
JOAN BAEZ/JUDAS PRIEST.
The album starts with “Blood & Iron”, a song that
is at the same level than Rock 'n' Rolf Kasparek from RUNNING WILD. The
relatively high lead voice is very clear, and as stated previously, it reminds
more or less of NIGHTWISH like the rest of the work. This, let me be clear, is
a personal opinion.
“The Hessian” is the second song and there are two
guest vocalists. Musically, it is a song that calls to mind the old 80’s IRON
MAIDEN.
It is followed by the really good “Clarisse’s
Nightmare”; song of about 6 minutes. It starts off very quiet and develops,
after about two minutes, towards the lines of the first two songs. Contrary to
these latter, the voice is not that high.
Song number 4 carries a title in German: "Der
Teufel und sein Lehrling" (The Devil and his Apprentice), a total
surprise. The interesting text includes the lines: “The war we will win, the
Holy Lance we must find, the singers sing to the moon, in honour of the master
race.” And towards the end: “The Devil does not forgive, after death we will
live, before my Lord, I know, he sets me free. I regret nothing.”
“The Giant” is dedicated to the memory of RONNIE JAMES
DIO and has been written entirely in his name. This six-minute song reminds
musically and completely of DIO, even in the female voice.
“Interpretación” has been composed in Spanish, about
which I cannot give an opinion, except that it is a song of Classic Heavy
Metal.
“Sailor’s Cross” is the seventh song. It arrives with
the typical strength of a Classic and Teutonic metal, in the style of old bands
such as RUNNING WILD. The lyrics allude to the true story about the
confrontation between the US and the URSS in 1962.
Also about a real event is the eighth song: “Perpetual
Flight”, which retells the story of a loyal man who sets out on a flight
towards a distant and strange land, where he is imprisoned and sentenced to 46
years in jail until he is murdered. Musically speaking, it is very similar to
the previous songs.
“Boleskine House”, the longest song of the album with
more than eight-minute duration, is absolutely a classic song of Heavy Metal,
with one or various guitar solos. Here, the lead vocals are again accompanied
by another male voice, which makes it validly richer in musical composition.
The last song is a cover of JOAN BAEZ: “Diamonds and
Rust”, also covered by JUDAS PRIEST. He who knows the song knows what could be
expected. Here you will find a quiet ballad with a high-pitched female voice.
Although I am no (longer a) big fan of Heavy Metal
(was I ever?), “Hagalaz”, HESS’s debut album, is an exceptional Heavy Metal
band in every sense of the word. Therefore, due to the fact that Miss Hess
possesses a high vocal range, it turns out pleasant to listen to for those who
enjoy this vocalization type. The search for a similarity with NIGHTWISH could
be, as was previously emphasized, available and justified, since the singer has
been in a Nightwish cover band. With or without the Finnish influence, the
music of HESS is a hundred per cent more honest and doesn’t have, from head to
toe, anything tacky.
As an additional conformation of the album, we must
say that it has a fantastic and dreamlike cover art. For the time being, the
album is available only in digital version.

Um
HESS handelt es sich um eine klassische Heavy Metal-Band aus Argentinien und
bevor sich nun alle politisch korrekten Gutmenschen wegen des Bandnamens sich
in die Hosen scheißen, kann man hier Entwarnung geben und die Windel bleibt
vielleicht halbwegs sauber, denn der Name wurde einfach vom Nachnamen von
Sängerin Melani Hess abgeleitet. Näheres um Fräulein Hess gibt es noch später.
Musikalische Einflüsse der Band sollen laut Informationen durch Bands wie KING
DIAMOND, DIO, IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST und ähnlichen entstanden sein, auch
wurden im Laufe der letzen Zeit diverse Nachspielungen der gerade erwähnten
Bands gemacht und dementsprechend veröffentlicht. Wenn man diesen Einfluss auf
Bandnamensgeberin und Sängerin Hess nehmen mag und vom Gesang ausgeht findet
man hier gleich den Vergleich zu NIGHTWISH, da es sich bei der Dame um eine
ausgebildete Opernsängerin handelt, doch wirkt der Gesang hier nicht so
gezwungen, sogar oftmals rau und ist dadurch auch lebhafter und formt und passt
sich dem klassischartigen zumeist teutonenhaften Schwer-Metal-Klang an.
Doch
nun erst mal zu „Hagalaz“, einem fast sechzigminütigen Album das man nach einer
Rune benannt hat (Vorsicht Gutmensch - Erkennungsmerkmal!) und das neun eigene
Lieder und eine JOAN BAEZ / JUDAS PRIEST-Nachspielung enthält.
Den
musikalischen Anfang macht ein Lied namens „Blood & Iron“ und dieses Lied
hätte auch kein Rock ´n´ Rolf Kasparek mit RUNNING WILD heutzutage nicht mehr
hinbekommen. Der relativ hohe Gesang der ganz klar im Vordergrund steht und wie
erwähnt an mehr oder weniger an NIGHTWISH erinnern mag passt sich wie bereits
erwähnt dem musikalischen Rest an ohne meiner Meinung nach zu übertrieben zu
wirken.
„The
Hessian“ ist das zweite Lied und hier wurde auch mit zwei Gastsängern
gearbeitet, musikalisch ein einwandfreies Lied das mehr auch an alte IRON
MAIDEN aus den 80érn erinnert.
Das
gut sechsminütige dritte Lied „Clarisse's Nightmare“ fängt hingegen sehr ruhig
an und entwickelt sich erst nach gut zwei Minuten zu einem Lied das sich in die
Reihe der ersten beiden Lieder einreihen kann. Der Gesang ist aber im Gegensatz
zu den anderen beiden nicht ganz so hoch gehalten.
Lied
Nummer vier trägt den deutschen Titel „Der Teufel und sein Lehrling“ und dieses
Lied wird auch zu aller „Überraschung“ auch in Deutsch vorgetragen. Der
interessante Text beinhaltet die Zeilen „… Den Krieg werden wir gewinnen, die
heilige Lanze müssen wir finden, die Sänger singen dem Mond, zu Ehren des
Herrenvolkes … “ und gegen Ende wird auch noch „Der Teufel wird es nicht vergeben,
nach dem Tod werden wir leben, vor meinem Herrn, ich weiss: Er spricht mich
frei. Ich bereue nichts“ vorgetragen.
„The
Giant” steht ganz im Zeichen und zur Erinnerung eines Ronnie James Dio und
wurde komplett auf ihn zugeschrieben. Das sechsminütige Lied erinnert auch
musikalisch voll und ganz an DIO, außer das eben der Gesang weiblicher und
höher ist.
„Interpretación”
wurde komplett in Spanisch verfasst und auch vertont, kann ich nicht allzu viel
erzählen, außer das das Lied eine klassische Heavy Metal-Nummer geworden ist.
„Sailors
Cross“, Lied Nummer sieben kommt hingegen wieder voll und ganz Metal-lastig
klassisch und teutonisch von älteren Bands und das nicht nur vom Titelnamen von
RUNNING WILD her beeinflusst daher. Der Text des Liedes behandelt soviel mir
bekannt eine wahre Geschichte um eine Seekonfrontation der USA und der UDSSR
1962.
Einer
wahren Geschichte nach behandelt auch das achte Lied „Perpetual Flight“ und
zwar handelt dieses Lied um einen loyalen Menschen / Mann der einen Flug in ein
fernes und „fremdes“Land startete, eingesperrt, in den Jahren danach verurteilt
und nach sechsundvierzig Jahren Gefangenschaft ermordet wurde. Musikalisch
reiht sich auch dieses Lied zu den davorigen ein.
„Boleskine
House” das längste Lied mit über acht Minuten auf dem Album ist wieder ein
absolutes klassisches Heavy Metal-Lied mit dem ein oder anderen melodischen
Gitarrensolo. Der Gesang der kurz auch wieder von einem Gastsänger unterstützt
wird kommt hier absolut passend dazu zur Geltung und steigert sich in den
höheren Lagen demnach der musikalischen Untermalung.
Das
letzte Lied ist die JOAN BAEZ-Nachspielung „Diamonds and Rust“ das ja auch von
JUDAS PRIEST nachgespielt wurde. Wer das Lied kennt weiß ja was einen erwartet,
hier ist das eben ein bekanntes ruhiges balladeskes Lied das mit einem hohen
weiblichen Gesang verfeinert wurde.
Obwohl
ich nicht (mehr) der allzu große Heavy Metal-Fanatiker bin (war ich das
überhaupt schon mal?) bot „Hagalaz“ das ja das Debütalbum von HESS war mal
wieder ein Heavy Metal-Musikvergnügen der außergewöhnlichen Art und Weise.
Außergewöhnlich deshalb da Fräulein Hess über ein recht hohes Organ verfügt was
für einige wahrscheinlich wieder gewöhnungsbedürftig und deshalb eben
Geschmackssache sein wird. Die Vergleiche zu NIGHTWISH sind wie erwähnt
vorhanden und gerechtfertigt, da die Sängerin davor unter anderem in einer
NIGHTWISH-Cover-Band aktiv war. Den Einfluss zu den Finnen hin oder her, die
Musik von HESS ist aber zu hundert Prozent ehrlicher und hat Hand und Fuß ohne
dabei kitschig zu wirken.
Zur
Gestaltung und zu einem Beiheft des Albums das ein zeichnerisch wahrlich
traumhaftes und fantasieartiges Frontmotiv enthält kann ich nichts erwähnen, da
das Album bisher leider nur als digitale Version erschienen ist.

HESS es una banda argentina, que
interpreta un estilo clásico de Heavy Metal. Con influencias que van desde
King Diamond a Ronnie James Dio, la banda lleva sus influencias en la manga sin
sonar como una banda tributo. El comodín es la vocalista, cuyo nombre, es
también el de la banda, Melani Hess. Ella es una cantante de ópera entrenada y
posee una de las voces más agudas que he escuchado en mucho tiempo. Esto no es
un caso “Nightwish se encuentra con Dio”, ni nada de eso. Esto es puro Heavy
Metal pero con un giro diferente.
El rango vocal de Melani se puede escuchar casi al instante en el tema que abre el disco: “Blood & Iron” (Sangre y acero). La canción tiene una estupenda guitarra, y muestra algunas de las notas más altas que Melani puede alcanzar. Los coros de fondo con notas altas pueden ser un poco discordantes o altos para aquellos que no están acostumbrados a ella. Sus coros trabajan mucho a la manera como un teclado o cuerdas lo harían en una canción como esta.
“The Hessian” (El Hessiano) es un parate más rockero, con voces que se entretejen entre los versos. El solo de guitarra en esta canción, es incluso un poco de toque blusero, pero así está muy bien jugado.
“Clarisse’s Nightmare” (La pesadilla de Clarisse) ralentiza las cosas al principio, y resalta el registro más grave de Melani. Al igual que algunas de sus contemporáneas vocalistas femeninas operísticas entrenadas, puede ajustar las operísticas y utilizar agresión cuando es necesario. La sensación de doble tiempo de la última parte de la canción, realmente lleva la canción a toda marcha, y se realiza casi al instante, y es un poco sorprendente en un primer momento.
“Der Teufel Und Sein Lehrling” es una canción cantada en alemán, lo que realmente me confundió al principio. “El diablo y su aprendiz” es lo que significa, para aquellos que necesitan de Google Translate (me incluyo).

Cualquier persona que es un fan del hombre, apreciará el delicado cuidado de Melani con su voz, y las letras bien colocadas. No voy a arruinar la canción hablando de ella, pero echa un vistazo al enlace de abajo para escuchar la canción en la página de Soundcloud de HESS.
“Interpretación” (Interpretation en Inglés) es la segunda canción en lengua extranjera, esta vez en su nativa, el español. La influencia de Dio que se ha mencionado anteriormente se puede escuchar en el rockero “Sailor’s cross” (La cruz del marinero). Un riff de guitarra que se siente influenciado por canciones clásicas, como Rock N Roll Children.
El heavy melódico “Perpetual Flight” (Vuelo perpetuo) es una canción sólida, mientras que “Boleskine House” (La Mansión Boleskine) es la canción más larga, de poco más de ocho minutos y medio. La canción nos muestra como Melani habla en Inglés, que debo decir que su Inglés, hablando y cantando son muy buenos, por no ser su lengua materna. Esta canción cuenta con algunos grandes riffs de guitarra, y varios cambios de tempo y dinámicas.

Un sólido debut de una banda de la que nunca había oído hablar, pero a la que prestaré atención a partir de ahora. Le deseo a Melani y a sus compañeros de banda suerte, y espero con esfuerzo que un segundo trabajo salga más temprano que tarde. Hess is an Argentinian band, that plays a classic brand of Heavy Metal. With influences that range from King Diamond to Dio, the band wears their influences on their sleeves without sounding like a tribute band. The wildcard is the vocalist, whose name , is also the bands, Melani Hess. She is a trained opera singer with some of the highest vocals I have heard in a long time. This is not Nightwish meets Dio, or anything like that. This is straight ahead Heavy Metal with different twist.
Melani's range can be heard almost instantly on the speedy opener that is, Blood and Iron. The song has some great guitar playing, and showcases some of the highest notes Ms. Melani can reach. The extended background high notes can be a bit jarring or long for those not accustomed to it. Her background vocals work a lot like keyboard/string arrangement would on a song like this. The Hessian is a stop and go rocker, with vocals that weave in between verses. The guitar solo on this song, is even a little bit bluesy but well is very well played. Clarisse's Nightmare slows things down at first, and highlight's Melani's "lower" register. Like some of her contemporary female operatic trained vocalists, she can dial back the operatics and use some aggression when needed. The double-time feeling of the latter part of the song, really takes the song into high gear, and it is done almost instantly, and it is kind of surprising at first. Der Teufel Und Sein Lehrling is a song sung in German, which actually threw me off at first. The Devil And His Apprentice is what it means, for those of who need Google Translate(Myself Included). The Giant, is a bittersweet tribute to one of the band's biggest influences, Ronnie James Dio. Anyone who is a fan of the man, will appreciate Melani's delicate care with her vocals, and the well placed lyrics. Interpretacion(Interpretation in English) is the second foreign language song, this time in their native, Spanish. The previously mentioned Dio's influence can be heard in the rocker, Sailors Cross. A guitar riff that feels influenced by classic songs, like Rock N Roll Children. The heavy melodic Perpetual Flight is a solid song while Boleskin House is the longest song at just over eight and a half minutes. The song features Melani speaking in English, which I must say her English, speaking and singing are very good, for it not being her first language. The latter features some great guitar riffs, and several tempo changes and dynamics. The last song is a beautiful acoustic rendition of the Joan Baez(also covered by Judas Priest) classic, Diamonds and Rust. This song shows Melani's training and amazing range. It brings the entire disc to climatic close.

HESS was formed in July 2010 when Melani Hess (vocals) decided to start a music project different from her former band Euphemya (Nightwish covers). To that end, she summoned drummer Luis Dufour from Fire & Steel (Manowar covers) and guitarist Marcos Schaimne (former bands: Iron Mask, Redeemer and Presagio). Some months later, guitarist Ariel Schefer joined the band; and after a short search for bass players, Nicolas Copani (from Nocturnal Howl) became the fifth member of the band.
The main objective of the band was that of being a tribute to Classic Heavy Metal, playing cover songs from great bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, among others. The vocal register of the singer has given the band an original touch: her soprano voice together with Heavy Metal music have achieved a special merger.
In November 2011, HESS began the recording of their first demo, which was released in March 2012. It consists of two songs: Blood & Iron and The Giant (in memory of Ronnie James Dio).
At the beginning of 2013, Marcos Schaimne left the band to join Diva Satánica. In his place entered guitarist Diego Martarello.
HESS is still playing live shows and at the same time composing songs, trying to find its own sound. At the end of 2013, HESS started the recording of what would be their first album, which consists of 9 songs of their own. The album called “Hagalaz” was released on 27th October 2014 in digital version.
During 2015, HESS played at two shows in Buenos Aires and began the making of their first official video of the song Clarisse’s Nightmare (album: Hagalaz), released on Januar 4th, 2016. In November 2015, drummer Luis Dufour left the band on good terms.In December 2015, drummer Martin Blengino (from Nippur) joined the band.

HESS se formó en Julio del 2010, cuando Melani Hess (voz principal) decidió emprender un proyecto distinto a su anterior banda (Euphemya, tributo a Nightwish). Para tal fin convocó a los músicos Luis Dufour (batería) de la banda tributo a Manowar, Fire & Steel, y a Marcos Schaimne (guitarra) ex violero de Iron Mask, Redeemer y Presagio. Poco tiempo después Ariel Schefer de Old School se unió a la banda para adicionar el sonido de una segunda guitarra. Después de una corta búsqueda de bajistas, Nicolas Copani (de Nocturnal Howl) llegó a ser el quinto integrante de la formación.
El objetivo principal de la banda era el de ser un tributo al Heavy Metal Clásico, haciendo covers de grandes bandas como Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Dio, Judas Priest, Saxon, entre otras. El registro vocal de la cantante le ha dado a la banda y particularmente a los covers un toque original; ya que siendo soprano, junto con el metal pesado logran una fusión especial (impactando al público positiva o quizás negativamente).
En noviembre del año 2011, HESS comenzó la grabación de su primer demo, el cual fue lanzado a mitad de marzo del 2012 y está compuesto por dos temas propios: Blood & Iron y The Giant (canción en memoria de Ronnie James Dio).
A principios del 2013, Marcos Schaimne se retira de la banda para unirse a Diva Satánica. En su lugar ingresó el guitarrista Diego Martarello.
HESS continúa realizando recitales en vivo y paralelamente componiendo canciones, tratando de encontrar su sonido propio. A fines del 2013 HESS comenzó el proceso de grabación de lo que fue su primer álbum. El álbum llamado “Hagalaz” está compuesto por 9 canciones propias. Fue lanzado el 27 de Octubre de 2014 en versión digital.
Durante el 2015, HESS tocó en dos shows en Buenos Aires y comenzó la filmación de su primer videoclip oficial de la canción Clarisse’s Nightmare (álbum: Hagalaz), lanzado el 4 de Enero de 2016.
